A major milestone was reached today in Multi Development UK Ltd's SouthGate scheme in Bath, with the completion of the structure of Phase 1; Block A, B and C. To mark the occasion, Cllr David Bellotti, Chairman of Bath & North East Somerset Council took part in the "topping out" ceremony which celebrates achieving this point in the construction of the £360m SouthGate development.
As part of the event, a 1m square hole was filled in with concrete to mark the completion of Block C. The ceremony was celebrated by the developers, Multi Development and joint venture partners Morley, building contractors Sir Robert McAlpine and members from Bath & North East Somerset Council who have all worked on bringing SouthGate to this momentous landmark.
Presenting a commemorative tankard to Multi Development's Managing Director, Paul Sargent, Cullum McAlpine of Sir Robert McAlpine's said: " To be involved in such a prestigious and complex project has been a personal privilege and to have reached this significant milestone on programme is as a direct result of the teamwork and effort put in by SRM and their subcontractors."
Paul Sargent, Managing Director, Multi Development UK said, "Multi is delighted to have reached this significant stage in the construction of SouthGate. I am confident that, upon completion, Bath will have not only an exciting new retail, leisure and residential offer but also a splendid landmark that I'm sure will become both locally and internationally acclaimed."
Topping out celebrations are an important tradition in construction projects and symbolise the completion of the highest point of the building. With the completion of the structural build at SouthGate, the fit-out of this retail-led mixed-use scheme can now get underway.
Swedish fashion giant H&M and Boots have both signed up to the £360 million SouthGate development. H&M will take a 21,000 sq ft store over two levels within the heart of the 400,000 sq ft regeneration scheme. The retail unit will be H&M's first store in Bath. Boots have committed to more than doubling their presence within their city by relocating from their existing Bath store to a 30,000 sq ft unit within SouthGate. Both the Boots and H&M stores will open with Phase 1.
Phase 1 of SouthGate will open in Autumn 2009.
